Proton Mail
Beginner RecommendedThe best Gmail alternative is Proton Mail. Your emails encrypted, hosted in Switzerland. The most direct Gmail replacement.
Information verified on July 22, 2026
Description
Created by CERN researchers in 2014, Proton Mail is the most widely used encrypted email service in the world. Your emails are end-to-end encrypted: even Proton can't read them. The free plan is enough for personal use (1 GB, 1 address). The paid plan unlocks a custom domain and 15 GB of storage. Hosted in Switzerland, outside US jurisdiction.
My take
Proton is where my emails went, out of conviction. Sorting through twenty years of messages took me longer than the migration itself. I tell the whole story, import included, in chapter 4.

- how do you migrate twenty years of email without losing a message or a contact?
- which address can no one ever take away from you, and how do you get it?
