Description

Firefox is the only major browser independent from Google. Developed by the Mozilla Foundation since 2004, it offers enhanced tracking protection by default. Thousands of extensions (including uBlock Origin) allow customization. Firefox syncs bookmarks and passwords across devices via an encrypted Mozilla account.

My take

It was my browser as a teenager, and it's the one I reinstalled when I left Chrome, along with uBlock Origin. The Chrome reflex took a few days to fade, no more. I tell the story of the switch in chapter 2.

  • Advanced tracking protection
  • Containers to isolate tabs
  • Rich extensions (uBlock Origin)
  • Encrypted sync between devices
  • Open source
  • Web standards compliant

  • + Enhanced Tracking Protection enabled by default
  • + Thousands of extensions including uBlock Origin

Weaknesses

Firefox vs Google Chrome: the comparison

Comparison between Firefox and Google Chrome
Criterion Firefox Google Chrome
Price Free. Free

Source code Open (auditable) Proprietary
Migration difficulty Easy (1/5)

Comparison

Firefox is the only browser truly independent from Google. Brave offers an easier transition from Chrome (same engine). Tor Browser is for total anonymity but sacrifices speed.

This topic is chapter 2 of my book

It answers these questions, among others:

  • which settings actually make a difference once the browser is installed?
  • how do you handle the work computer where Chrome is required?
  • and how do Safari and Edge hold up, the ones nobody ever compares?
