Signal or WhatsApp: why switch?

“WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, so why switch?” It’s the objection I hear every time, and it’s legitimate. Yes, the content of your WhatsApp messages is protected, by Signal’s protocol no less. But content is only part of the story. The other part is metadata, and that’s where everything plays out.

What Signal does better

Metadata, then. Knowing that you write to your doctor, how often you contact a given person, at what time and from where: this information sketches your social life without reading a single message. WhatsApp belongs to Meta, whose business is precisely turning that kind of social graph into ad targeting. Signal doesn’t collect those traces. It has nothing to cross-reference with Facebook or Instagram, and nothing to hand over if asked: you can’t exploit what you don’t have.

The structure changes everything. Signal is run by a non-profit foundation, funded by donations. No shareholders, no ad network, no strategic pivot to fear next quarter. The code is open and verifiable by anyone, while WhatsApp asks you to take its word for it.

And day to day? Messages, calls, group chats, voice notes: you won’t feel lost. It’s the simplest migration of the whole exit journey, there’s nothing to transfer, just an app to install.

What WhatsApp does better

One thing only, but it’s huge: everyone is on it. Your family, the school group, the sports club. An empty messaging app is useless, and it’s the network effect that keeps people there, not the quality of the product. WhatsApp also offers a few more advanced group chat and broadcast features, but that’s not where the real lock is.

No point in kidding yourself: you won’t convince all your contacts. The realistic strategy is both apps in parallel. Signal for the people who follow, WhatsApp for the rest, and the cursor shifts over time. In my case, the conversations that matter moved over in a few weeks, without forcing anyone. Every contact you win makes the app more useful for the next one.

Verdict

Choose Signal if you want your conversations, and above all their context, to stop feeding an ad network. It’s the best instant messenger for privacy, and the effort required is minimal: install it, and let your conversations migrate one by one.

Stay on WhatsApp only if none of your contacts wants to move. Even then, having Signal installed costs nothing: you become the contact someone else was missing.
