How many French people use Gmail?

Google loves big numbers, but never for France. The number of Gmail users in the country appears nowhere: not in Alphabet’s reports, not in press releases. So I cross-referenced the available public clues, each with its date. Here is what can be stated without kidding ourselves.

What Google announces for the world

About 2.5 billion Gmail accounts. That’s the figure Google puts forward and the press repeats at every security alert (Forbes, September 2025). More than twenty years after its launch in 2004, Gmail is by far the world’s leading email service.

Accounts, not people. That nuance changes everything: many of us own several, and every Android phone makes one at first startup. Another reference point, measured differently: Gmail represents 24% of email opens observed worldwide by Litmus in May 2026. And even that underestimates reality, because a Gmail account checked in an iPhone’s Mail app is counted on Apple’s side.

Yes, some of these studies are old. That’s precisely the problem: nobody has published anything better since. I use them for what they are, orders of magnitude, each with its year.

My estimate: 20 to 30 million French people

Let’s do the math, it fits on a receipt. 56.3 million internet users multiplied by 2.1 addresses each gives about 120 million email addresses in France. If Gmail holds 27% of them, that’s around thirty million Gmail addresses. Remove the duplicates, the dormant inboxes and the accounts Android creates by default: between 20 and 30 million people remain.

In other words, about one French internet user in two has a Gmail address. The order of magnitude is consistent with the phone base: two smartphones out of three run Android, so with a built-in Google account.

Why nobody has the real figure

Google counts accounts, never heads. How many people behind the 2.5 billion? A mystery. Add the secondary addresses, the ones reserved for newsletters, and the ghost accounts of old phones. No institute publishes a recent French count by provider: the solid measurements stop in 2019.

My barometer has the merit of existing and the flaw of being biased: the respondents are visitors of this site, so people already thinking about their use of Google. If half of them still use Gmail, the proportion in the general population is probably higher. The raw figures, updated continuously, are on the barometer.
