The Digital Independence Barometer

The figures come from the digital independence diagnostic offered on this site and on vesio.app: 24 questions across 5 dimensions (communication and digital identity; photos, documents and personal cloud; browsing, search and tracking; devices and ecosystems; digital hygiene and autonomy). The exact collection period is shown above the figures.

Each percentage is the share of respondents who name that service as the one they mainly use for that purpose. Every completed diagnostic is recorded anonymously — no email address, no individual answer — and one person counts once: if they retake the test, only their most recent answer is kept. Figures from before September 2026 cover only the respondents who had asked for their report by email, the only population recorded until then.

The rows are not comparable with one another. The questions do not offer the same number of alternatives — five possible answers for email, three for the other uses, leaving aside “I don't know” — and Google's share is mechanically lower wherever there are more ways out. The photos row also covers two services the question does not separate, Google Photos and Amazon Photos.

The barometer photographs a state, at one point in time. No question asks what a respondent has left behind, when, or what would stop them: these figures therefore measure neither a migration, nor how easy leaving is, nor a trend.

Usage is self-reported and statistics are aggregated anonymously; no individual result is ever published. The independence score runs from 0 (total dependence) to 100 (full autonomy). The sample is self-selected: these are visitors to this site, already thinking about their use of Google. These figures are not representative of the French population.
