Three figures are enough to sum up Google’s position in France: 88% of search, two browsers out of three, two smartphones out of three. Here is the detail, from search engine to smartphone, with public sources you can cross-check and quote freely.

Search: 88% for Google

Bing5.73%
Yahoo2.27%

Qwant0.94%
DuckDuckGo0.74%

Almost nine searches out of ten go to Google. The privacy-respecting engines, Ecosia, Qwant and DuckDuckGo combined, weigh less than 3%. France’s own Qwant stays under the 1% bar, despite its name recognition. Yet changing search engines is the simplest migration there is: the guide to replacing Google Search explains it, and the Brave Search vs Google comparison details my choice.

The browser: Chrome at 66%

Safari15.76%
Firefox6.24%

Samsung Internet2.44%
Opera1.51%

Why does this figure matter so much? Because the browser sees everything: every page, every form, every saved password. Firefox, the only historic independent alternative, has dropped below 7%. To switch, the guide to leaving Chrome gives the way forward, and two comparisons help you decide: Brave vs Chrome and Firefox vs Chrome.

The smartphone: Android at 68%

Android equips 67.67% of French smartphones, iOS 32.31% (StatCounter, June 2026). And an Android phone is set up around a Google account: two French people out of three therefore create one with their phone, before choosing anything at all. It’s one of the silent drivers behind the number of Gmail users, estimated on a dedicated page. To get out of that machinery without throwing away your phone, there is the guide to de-Googling Android.

The audience: Google reaches 99% of internet users

Médiamétrie counts 56.3 million internet users in France in May 2026, or 96% of residents aged 11 and over. The same month, the Google brand was visited by 55.8 million people. Do the division: 99% of French internet users go through Google every month. YouTube reaches 50.5 million of them, or 9 out of 10.

The dominance continues service by service. In December 2025, Google Maps had 42.4 million monthly visitors, covering 66% of French people, far ahead of Waze (23.1 million) and Mappy (10.6 million), still according to Médiamétrie.

Where do these figures come from?

StatCounter measures the real traffic of millions of websites: page views, not a survey. It’s the global reference for web market share, updated every month and freely available. Médiamétrie, for its part, measures people through a panel representative of the French population. The two approaches complement each other: one weighs usage, the other counts people. When they tell the same story, as here, you can be confident.

What it changes for you

An 88% market share is not an abstract statistic. It’s the near-certainty that your searches, your browser and your phone all talk to the same player, which links everything to a single profile. To measure what that looks like in your case, the free diagnostic asks 24 questions, and the guide to leaving Google draws the overall plan. Respondent statistics are published continuously on the barometer.
